[character history / background]:
In a fictitious 19th Century, the Earl of Millenium has created Akuma, bio-machines made from the souls of the dead and the sorrow of those left behind. The Black Order fights against him, using those known as Exorcists who can wield a weapon known as Innocence to free the souls of the Akuma. Allen Walker, the main protagonist of D.Gray-Man, is an Exorcist whose Innocence resides in his left arm. Lavi is one of Allen's friends and fellow Exorcists.
As well as being an Exorcist, Lavi is also an apprentice "Bookman." He gave up his real name upon choosing to become a Bookman, and has chosen the name Lavi for now. "Lavi" is actually his 49th alias, as he has a new one for each new assignment. The Bookmen are those who observe and record history, not becoming involved with it. Lavi's mentor, known simply as Bookman, says that they are only on the side of the Exorcists by chance, in order to better see history as it unfolds. Lavi seems to have a problem with this at times, as he is close friends with several members of the Black Order, namely Allen, Kanda, and Lenalee, and he cannot detach his emotions from the situation. He has been scolded by Bookman for this several times, being told that he is not supposed to be so involved, merely record the history. Before joining the Order, Lavi was cold and distant from what he wrote in his records. But now that he has friends there, his heart is involved and he is torn between his duty as a Bookman and his feelings for his friends.
Recently, an enemy (Rhode Camelot) drew him into a dream-world where she exploited this internal dilemna, forcing him to confront an alternate, colder version of himself. Lavi seemed to fail the test and succumbed to his fears, letting his "heart" be killed inside the dream. Rhode was able to control him for a time, and forced him to fight against Allen. Lavi managed to pull himself back, however, and was willing to sacrifice himself to kill Rhode and destroy the alternate version of himself who was attacking Allen. As Lavi was attempting suicide by fire, Allen dove through the flames to save him, refusing to let him die.
Even after Lavi was saved, it seemed to be in vain. The place where the Exorcists were fighting was an Ark controlled by the Earl, and it was slowly collapsing as it was downloaded to a new location. During the next fight, Lavi fell down a pit, even after Allen tried to catch him. This is the point where I'll be taking him into the City.
[character abilities]:
His weapon, or Innocence, is a hammer which grows in size and length according to his will, from palm-size to city-size. He calls it "Odzuchi Kodzuchi." Aside from a purely physical use, the hammer has multiple attacks or "seals," possibly corresponding to the four classic elements: earth (wood), fire, air (heaven), and water. Thus far, we have only seen him use wood, heaven, and air, and a combination of fire and heaven. It is implied that he is still learning how to use his weapon fully, as he has to be reminded at one point that he can use the wood seal to affect nature directly. This hammer was destroyed in the Ark as Lavi fell; when he extended it toward Allen, it cracked and broke. He may regain it in the City.
As a Bookman-in-training, Lavi has a perfect photographic memory, able to record and memorize anything he sees at a single glance. He remembers everything he's ever seen, heard, or read, down to the very last seemingly-insignificant detail. He wears a patch over his right eye... though that eye is not useless by any means. He has only uncovered it once in the manga so far, when he had to search through hundreds and hundreds of fake keys to find one particular real one... which was only distinguished by minute scratches and dents on it. It seems that by using both eyes, he is able to observe and remember in even greater detail... possibly he keeps it covered to avoid a sensory overload.
[character personality]:
Lavi is good-natured, irreverent, and expressive. Often he acts as the comic relief in serious situations. He has a tendency to pop up unexpectedly in places... in a pile of books, in a barrel, randomly in a room, leaving other characters wondering "where the heck did this guy come from?" He also likes to call people by nicknames... sometimes completely inappropriate to their personality. For example, he calls the serious vampire-like Exorcist Arystar Krory "Crow-chan," his master Bookman "Panda" (due to the dark circles around his eyes), and a converted Akuma "Chomesuke" (a cute name because the Akuma often ends his sentences with "cho"). In addition, he's the only one who calls Kanda by his first name, Yuu... much to the apparent annoyance of the other Exorcist. There was an added scene in the anime as well in which Lavi braids Kanda's ponytail while he's sleeping, something no sane person would dare attempt!
Despite his laid-back attitude, Lavi does care deeply for his friends and comrades, and can be deadly serious when the situation calls for it. He becomes incredibly frustrated when he's helpless in a situation, and has a temper that can flare up at times. Though it is required by his profession to be uninvolved in situations, he has trouble detaching himself from his emotions. During a heart-wrenching event when many of his allies died, he said to Bookman, "This is too much..." implying that he could not distance himself from the situation. He is especially close to Allen, Lenalee, and Kanda. Most of the time, he puts up a cheerful, friendly persona... which he isn't even sure if it's real or not, now.
